If the BIOS sees the hard drive you have a chance with Linux or to repair with Hiren's CD hard disk tools. If it doesn't then you'd only see CD/DVD, floppy, USB or LAN as boot options. But I also test with Linux Live CDs and also on another computer via USB adapter, since Linux can boot from USB, whereas WinXP could not. I've given new live to computers with bad or missing hard drives this way.

Control Panel or System Tools or Properties of that hard drive...my WinXP tower is a bit too slow and my Win7 computers aren't powered on.

  Hi Joan,

I wanted to acknowledge your responses, and let you know that I will be

working on this problem of mine again tomorrow afternoon (in between work

stuff!). I want to make sure I understand your questions:

When you asked if the BIOS and Control panel see it, are you referring to

the HD? What specifically in the Control Panel are you referring to?

I hadn't thought to check with a Linux/Ubuntu CD/DVD, and will try that

  tomorrow, too.

I'll post back with more when I have more info.

  Thanks again,

  Ellen

Did the computer's BIOS see it? Does the Control Panel see it? For testing,

I use Puppy Linux, Lubuntu or an Ubuntu-based CD/DVD Live CD to use their

drive tool to show disk health. Sometimes Linux can use a drive that Windows

can't, it might be where the bad sectors or other defects are located on its

  platters.

  Hi Joan,

Thanks for respinding. Yes, I unzipped and the BootCD disc worked properly

when I booted from it. It's that the Hard Drive tests did not run, and

Seatools could not find a drive.
