Hi Roger,

I should have referred to the Microsoft Office Diagnostics, which is located
in the Microsoft Office Tools folder.

I thank you for the information about the Seagate warranties to OEMs. I will
definitely follow up on that if I determine (which I have not, so far) that
the drive is defective. I am correct about the date of purchase; and
discovered that Dell's warranty runs from the date the unit is shipped. I
had a two-year warranty which expired on 12/4, according to my records, and
on 12/3/12 according to Dell's records.

  More follow-up information is posted.

  Ellen

  Ellen,

I'm re-reading your original message, and you said something about an
  Outlook diagnostic tool.

I have not heard of such a thing (perhaps others here have?) and am curious
as to whether it's legit, or not.

Also, you said the computer was two years old, but that Dell won't honor the
  hard drive warranty.

According to the Seagate site, Seagate warranties hard drives to the OEM
(Dell in this case) for three years, with some exceptions.

Were you perhaps wrong about the date of purchase?

Seagate does state that it will not RMA "end-user's" (you) hard drives
directly, the user has to return it to Dell.

But if the computer is less than three years old, Dell should warranty the
hard drive for you. You may have to contact them and remind them.

If a tech support person can't help you, ask to speak to a Supervisor.
