Hi Roger,

The hard disk tests in Hiren's BootCD are DOS tests, so that's what I was
trying to run. It was a recommendation from Ardell on this list.

The drive is not under warranty any longer-warranty just expired. I
contacted Dell before it expired, they did some testing by connecting to the
computer, and decided the drive was fine. They will not replace it. I cannot
replace it through Seagate because it is OEM.

I am trying to figure out whether it is actually starting to fail or having
trouble, or whether I am having software problems (Outlook has been crashing
a lot, and the Outlook test said it was the hard drive).

I haven't had time yet to uninstall/reinstall Office, or to open the
computer case and clean it out, check the HD cables, etc.

I don't know whether it is really failing or not. If it is failing, I will
replace it. I would like to be a little more sure than I am now that I
actually have a hardware problem before I spend the money on a new drive.

  So, that's what I'm thinking!

  Ellen

  Ellen,

I read through the webpage of the link that Vincent sent, and I thought:
  "This is NUTS!"

If I may ask, why are you trying to use a DOS version of HDAT2 in the first
  place.

The drive is in warranty, right? Just have the manufacturer replace it.

I don't understand why you're trying to save it ("beating a dead horse"
  comes to mind)

Are there files you need to recover from it?

You could have RMA'd and received a new one in the time you've spent messing
  with this one.

Of course, your time is your to do with what you wish, but even if you can
revive the drive, how long do you think it will last?

  Can you trust it?

  Just a thought ...
