I vote for Western Digital Black also.

I like Western Digital SATA 3 drives (caviar black). I shop for price and
size and cache. I've used all the major drive manufacturers and in my own
unscientific view WD has worked consistently best for me.

While I think the drive tests are apparently inconclusive, I would
nevertheless be looking for a backup. You just can't take the chance with
  your valuables.

  Hi Ardell,

I tried to run the Seatools from the same menu, and Seatools did not find a
  drive at all.

Since the warranty on the computer is about to expire (according to my
records), I called Dell. Dell told me that the warranty expired yesterday,
but the tech agreed to talk with me at no charge anyway. This tech ran
several Dianostic tests from the boot order window (I don't know what to
call it-it's what comes up when you press <F12> repeatedly). The Diagnostics
were fine. He also checked a system log, which showed that Office/Outlook
was freezing often, and iTunes was also not working well. He suggested I
uninstall/reinstall both programs. He also checked a couple of other things,
and did not have a particularly helpful response (or at least I didn't
understand it) when I asked him about why the DOS test programs did not run
  or recognize the drive.

I am going to open the case and clean it out, as well as check the cables to
make sure they are completely seated properly.

In case I need to replace the drive, I cloned it earlier today. However, I
don't have any idea what to replace it with, and would appreciate any
recommendations you can give for a good 1.5T drive in just in case. So you
don't have to go searching through previous messages, the drive that I have
now is a Serial ATA 2 HD.

Thanks so much for your help.

  Ellen

I don't know what that means. Can you run any of the other hard drive
utilities, or is the drive not loaded by any of them? My guess is that the
drive is failing badly enough so it is not being loaded by the DOS program.
