[Simply Computers] Re: How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

HOw why would an ISP lock out a "sick" computer? I have never heard of this before. Do you have some proof about this?

Hi Vincent and all,
I am writing with an update.
Running scanpst did not fix the problem (Outlook crashes too often),
although it did successfully repair the .pst file. Before messing around
with a new profile or an uninstall/reinstall, i remembered that the Office
install discs have a Repair option. I ran that yesterday, and so far it
seems to have had an affect. I have not had a crash yet, but it's still
early.
I'm going to watch it for a few more days and see what happens.
Again thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions.
Ellen

RE: [Simply Computers] Re: How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for your post and suggestions. I had completely forgotten about
scanpst, and ran it on the .pst file this morning. I had to run it twice
before it came up completely clean.

I think I will wait before creating a new profile to see if the scanpst
repair did anything. I like to know which one of the many fixes I usually
try actually fixed the problem!

I'll post back when I know more. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Thinking parsimony here why not create a new profile first prior to the
uninstall. Also, have you run a scanpst on the *.pst file? That may also be
a source of your problems. Run the scanpst until there are no errors. Even
though it will make a backup I would make a separate one.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for confirming my thought that I should look elsewhere.

There are some other error events listed in Event Viewer. I am looking at
the Windows Logs, Application section, and there are several with Error
messages. For example, I see several error messages for something called
SidebySide and some other programs I have on my computer. When I look at the
Applications and Service Logs-Microsoft-Office Sessions, I see lots of error
entries. They all say "this session ended with a crash", so my next step
will be to uninstall/reinstall. I have backups (I backup three times a
week), so I am not concerned about losing data.

I'll post back after I've been able to uninstall/reinstall.

Actually, that is the point of my message. As you hard drive passed all of
the tests, it suggests that the hard drive is not the problem.

You might start looking at other culprits.

Unfortunately, this is where a repair shop has the advantage .. they have
spare parts they can plug in.

You can buy a power supply tester, but that is probably not cost effective
for you.

Are all events in Event Viewer associated with Outlook?

It's fairly simple to uninstall/reinstall Office. All of your documents and
email should not be affected, although you would want to back them up just
in case.
