Nope Jim.  They really do do it that way these days.  Primarily, at least as far as I've seen, in little <2 KW generators, but that's the way the fancy ones work.


As far as I can tell, it's because using an inverter for output, allows the motor to do pretty much anything it pleases, and the output remains a clean 60Hz.  This lets them idle down when the load is low, while still maintaining frequency, or drive past 60Hz-synchronous speed to dump extra horsepower into the system when additional output is needed.
