In my opinion running a generator to use your lathe would be a pain.
I agree about keeping things original but I believe most home shop
lathes ran on 120V not necessarily from a light bulb socket like you
see in he olds SB ads but a wall socket will do.

You could get a nice new 120V motor that would fit the style. You
could even paint the new motor with the black rough textured paint to
give it an older feel. Then switch your flat leather belt to a new
serpentine belt. The mix of old and new will look very sharp.
