Well I can see that Frequency Control would be easier with a VFD like inverter, and I guess you also get current limiting for free.

For a smallish generator, 2KW is around 3HP, it might not add that much cost to the system.

Nope Jim.  They really do do it that way these days.  Primarily, at least as far as I've seen, in little <2 KW generators, but that's the way the fancy ones work.
