I guess I wasn't clear enough in my post about using a 555 for running a stepper. Like the ebay clock board, the timer still has to interface to a driver. There is no direct connection between the 555 and stepper.
Even if were possible to generate the right pulse sequences with a 555, one significant limitation to directly driving a stepper is the maximum current the 555 can output. It's only 200mA, so it would be necessary to boost its output with a transistor or two. Also, modern drivers use PWM to reduce power dissipation, and can micro-step for smoother motion. A linear driver with reasonable current capability would require a large heat sink and would not be nearly as efficient as a PWM driver. Pretty much the same difference between a linear power supply vs. a switcher.
