You could use a cheap USB games controller and an Arduino. I use one on my CNC for jogging.

         With that pulse signal generator
   how do you change Direction?
I usually just use a Arduino to
   drive my
   steppers.

   Yes, an
Arduino or the like is better but I have the signal
generator already for other kinds of electronic projects
both audio and RF.      I'll certainly use a computer
of some type later.   This is just a simple mechanical test
to see if the parts fit and move.
   You can't change direction with
a signal generator.   I have a toggle switch in my left
hand, just out of the video frame.  The inputs to the
   driver electronics are "step" and
"direction" so it is easy to use a signal
   generator and a switch.
I'm building this as a full CNC
machine but I want to think of a way to use it manually too.
Likely I will make some kind of hand held pendent but I
don't know what it will look like yet other then likely
   using this part: Hand-Wheel-Manual-Pulse-Encoder

If anyone wants to experiment with a driven
x-axis, here's a very inexpensive pulse generator that
works fine for manual control of a stepper--about $4
   shipped:
   https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motor
   -Pulse-Signal-Generator-for- Stepper-Motor-Driver-Controlle
   r-Speed-Regulator/192408581681
   ?hash=item2ccc71f631:g:9TcAAOS w5RRafB4K

   Feed it
9VDC, hook the clock and reverse outputs to a stepper
driver, and fiddle with the knob to adjust the speed of the
motor; mash one of the buttons for forward/reverse, and the
other for e-stop.  If it's a small motor you can even
   run power (up to 24V
   1A)  through this little guy to the stepper driver;
for larger motors use this piece for pulse and f/r signals
only and use a separate larger power supply to drive the
   motor.

Speaking of motor and driver, this
looks like a good value ($34):https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Sh
   ip-Nema-23-Stepper-Motor-w-Tos hiba-Driver-TB6600-kit-1-9-N-
   m-269-oz-in/322101071017?hash=
   item4afeb84ca9:g:YD0AAOSwH2VaB JG2

   You
might need to go up a size on the motor and driver for a
larger mill.  But to experiment with driving an x-axis for
a small mill, under $40 ain't too bad.

For low speed as a power feed
the basic setup would cost about $80 for the motor, driver
power supply and so way to control it.

Thanks for the explanation Chris, I figured there
was something keeping it in check.

   - also for the ideas on the stepper/power feed
thing. Might be something to think about as I was already
considering some sort of low tech driver for the X-axis.
I'll have to look into the pricing, but I've got
   other projects in progress.
