Re: [7x12minilathe] Re: Mini-Mill CNC, First Test of X-Axis.

Yes I can force the system to stall.   I stalled it intensionally many times while running at different speeds.    Stepper motors don't burn up like normal brushed DC motors when they stall.  There are a few reasons for this but the best explanation is that  steppers don't use brushes.  They are electronically commutated.   The driver is current limited.  I set driver box to limit at 4 amps.   I could even place a large handle on the motor shaft and rotate it backwards while it tried to move forward and then most current would be 4.0 amps.    As long as you never put enough current in to over heat the motor it will never burn up.

This motor I am using stalls out at about 4 Nm (425 in oz)

Me and almost everyone else uses "smart" drivers that limit the current.   If you were to try and build a dumb driver that is just a set of switches that send a constant voltage, like from maybe a battery then you must use a very low voltage so the current will always remain under the limit even in the worst case of a stall.   For this motor that would be about 3.75 volts.     But I put 36 volts into the driver and the driver converts that 36V to whatever the motor needs based on speed and load.

Bottom line is that they are idiot proof.

What you have to worry about is the same thing you worry about when operating by hand, that is feeding so fast that and end mill breaks or the spindle stalls or milling int the vice or whatever.

Chris- You probably know that thing I was wondering about since you were looking into torque issues:

What do those smaller powered systems do when they hit tough spots or the resistance changes during travel? I see you mentioned that it would stall out. Is it normally protected somehow (other than fuse) or do you have to worry about burning something up?

Thanks
