ESC's used to run "sensorless" BLDC's are actually fairly complex items.  They use the motor windings to detect the position of the rotor (i.e., magnet).  Since the rotor must be spinning in order to induce a voltage on the windings, the signal doesn't provide position information, but velocity information.  This implies some sort of integration to derive the position.  Also, the driver circuitry has to have a "high impedance" state so the voltage on the undriven winding (which is constantly changing) can be sensed.  Not something I'd want to design/make myself, especially considering how cheap ESC's are.
