[Simply Computers] Re: How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Actually, that is the point of my message. As you hard drive passed all of the tests, it suggests that the hard drive is not the problem.

You might start looking at other culprits.

Unfortunately, this is where a repair shop has the advantage .. they have spare parts they can plug in.

You can buy a power supply tester, but that is probably not cost effective for you.

Are all events in Event Viewer associated with Outlook?

It's fairly simple to uninstall/reinstall Office. All of your documents and email should not be affected, although you would want to back them up just in case.

RE: [Simply Computers] Re: How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Roger,

Thanks for your reply. An interesting idea! I'm wondering if there are other
ways to test a power supply without replacing one first (I don't have any
spare ones around). Any suggestions?

And one more question-what do you make of the fact that my hard drive passed
all the SeaTools tests?

I had a 1.5 TB Seagate hard drive that appeared to be failing. A number of
Windows programs started giving errors.

I ran the SeaTools, and the hard drive failed all tests. It was in warranty
so I sent it back to Seagate.

While it was gone, I installed an old 250 GB IDE drive, and restored a
recent disk image to it.

Seagate sent me a "refurbished" drive and gave me 90 day warranty on the
replacement.

It ran fine for two weeks, then started acting up. I ran SeaTools and it
failed the short test.

I bought a brand new Western Digital drive and transferred all my files to
it using Acronis True Image.

I sent the Seagate drive back and told them to keep it ... I didn't want
anything to do with them or their junk drives. A rep from Seagate phoned me
at least twice to see how they could resolve the situation, but I never
returned their calls.

The Western Digital drive ran fine for about a week, then started acting up.

On a whim, I replaced my power supply with a used one that I had on hand,
and the computer ran fine.

Then I bought and installed a brand new power supply and the computer (this
one) has been running flawlessly since then, over a year now.

RE: [Simply Computers] How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Joan,

I wanted to thank you for the suggestion that I run Hiren's BootCD in safe
mode. I was able to do that, although it took me a little while to figure it
out. I was able to access what was on the disc through Windows Explorer. I
realized, however, that once I was in the DOS menu of program, I really
didn't know how to run the programs and couldn't figure it out. My
frustration level at that point was too high, and I couldn't get the
patience I needed to try to figure out the programs.

I have posted an update, and hope you see it.

Again, thanks for your help. You were spot on!

When I was asked to help a neighbor, who had Charter techs come out 3 times
and she still could not get online. I was at a loss that her Dell that would
not let me boot from the CD. So I tried booting in Safe Mode and was able to
run Ccleaner and perhaps other malware tools. I was able to boot up regular
and get online to download the necessary programs and updates.

I couldn't even get online with a Linux Live CD, probably because Charter
had locked her very sick computer out of it. After I cleaned it up, the BIOS
allowed me to boot with a Linux Live CD for testing.

Sometimes I think a fellow tech told me it had to do with Dell interleaving,
or something like that. Anyway, I don't buy OEM computers until they're
about $10.00 at the local sale or thrift shop. Now I can find out how things
differ between AMD and Intel 64-bit finally.

Sorry my links don't work for some, but then AOL used to as bad as Norton to
get rid of, too. That's why I've started to put in the search string, so
they can look further for themselves.

RE: [Simply Computers] How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Hi Roger,

I should have referred to the Microsoft Office Diagnostics, which is located
in the Microsoft Office Tools folder.

I thank you for the information about the Seagate warranties to OEMs. I will
definitely follow up on that if I determine (which I have not, so far) that
the drive is defective. I am correct about the date of purchase; and
discovered that Dell's warranty runs from the date the unit is shipped. I
had a two-year warranty which expired on 12/4, according to my records, and
on 12/3/12 according to Dell's records.

More follow-up information is posted.

Ellen,

I'm re-reading your original message, and you said something about an
Outlook diagnostic tool.

I have not heard of such a thing (perhaps others here have?) and am curious
as to whether it's legit, or not.

Also, you said the computer was two years old, but that Dell won't honor the
hard drive warranty.

According to the Seagate site, Seagate warranties hard drives to the OEM
(Dell in this case) for three years, with some exceptions.

Were you perhaps wrong about the date of purchase?

Seagate does state that it will not RMA "end-user's" (you) hard drives
directly, the user has to return it to Dell.

But if the computer is less than three years old, Dell should warranty the
hard drive for you. You may have to contact them and remind them.

If a tech support person can't help you, ask to speak to a Supervisor.

RE: [Simply Computers] How Best to Test Seagate ST31500341AS

Hi Roger,

Sorry for the delay-finally able to update.

I downloaded the .iso file from the link you provided. It was a different
download than the one I had been working with. Even though I was able to
boot the disk, I was not able to run the program-I can't even remember why
at this point! I have also posted a general update; I hope you can find it
and follow more from there.

Thanks again,

Ellen

Hi Ellen

For some reason, I thought I remembered the HiRens CD as containing both DOS
and Windows versions of HDAT2, so that is why I wondered why you were trying
to use the DOS one.

I see now that it contains only the DOS version.

But wait: instead of doing all that messing with the missing file, you can
just go to the HDAT website and download the single program directly.

You can get either a .iso file, which will create a bootable CD with HDAT on
it ( a fully working version, I presume) or you can download a floppy disk
version.

The .iso file is here:

http://www.hdat2.com/files/hdat2iso_49b1.exe

Just download then double click to open the self extractor. It will create
the .iso which you can then burn to disk.

let us know
