  In Thunderbird, both of your messages are still threaded.  If you
look at the message source, you will find a line called "Thread-Index:"
with some hashed data after it.  That line determines what thread, and
where in that thread your message belongs.

  Microsoft is quite well known for breaking the way things are
supposed to be.  I wouldn't doubt that they did something to Outlook to
make it more friendly for novice users.
