Re: [SOUTHBENDLATHE] Starrett Last Word Dial Test Indicator ?

I picked up a Starrett 196a dti at the Southeast Ironworks metalworkers Faire in Guthrie, OK, this past May for, IIRC, $60 with all the accessories. Not new, of course, but it appears to work. If I find trouble with it, I'll probably be ahead even if I have to pay to have it fixed. Starrett accessories are not exactly cheap, either. ;)

If it's in good shape and not worn out it is a very good indicator for small amounts of runout. It is NOT bi-directional reading. There's a lever to flip to change the direction it reads.

A brand new 711FSZ direct from Starrett is $174, looks like all you get for that is the indicator, clamp and a case which in the pic on their site has empty slots for some rods and other things.

I suppose a Starrett Last Word Dial Test Indicator is appropriately fitting and retro for a South Bend lathe, but is it good value for money?
Or, it is obsolete and overpriced?
