Re: [SOUTHBENDLATHE] Starrett Last Word Dial Test Indicator ?

I will be listing an imperial and mm set with attachments and one case when we return from vacation in a week or so. Only imperfection is inch has a 'catch' every so offer about ¾ through its range and I've never been able to identify the reason. PM me if interested outside eBay environment

Excellent advice.  They show up often and some are priced reasonably. Some are ridiculously priced.  Watch for ones with a box and attachments.

Starrett Last Words can usually be picked up quite reasonably on eBay. Thing to do is pick up a few for yourself, rebuild/repair as needed, use one for training. They are quite easy to mend. Accumulate some parts. Keep the best one or two and sell the rest if necessary and probably get your money back and learn how to repair in the process.

If it's in good shape and not worn out it is a very good indicator for small amounts of runout. It is NOT bi-directional reading. There's a lever to flip to change the direction it reads.

A brand new 711FSZ direct from Starrett is $174, looks like all you get for that is the indicator, clamp and a case which in the pic on their site has empty slots for some rods and other things.

I suppose a Starrett Last Word Dial Test Indicator is appropriately fitting and retro for a South Bend lathe, but is it good value for money?

Or, it is obsolete and overpriced?
