Re: [Amateur-repairs] Re: Radio test set recomendation

I have a HP 8924c. Fine piece of equipment.  Just make sure it has the C on the end and not another letter.  Outside of a wide range multimeter  and wide range oscilloscope I don't think there is anything else needed.  Maybe a good dummy load and wattmeter for higher power. Only problem is that if used much below 20 MHz the calibration of the signal generator and power sensors goes way off.

There is a less expensive version that is similar that they sometimes have.  Think it is an e8285 that is around $ 1000 also.  If I remember right, it is calibrated below the 20 mhz  limit of the 8924c.  Just make sure it has all the options you want .  I think this one is only good for about 3 watts input.

I did not buy one from Amtronix, but another place.  After a year or so it was taking some time to come on when pluged in.  Indicating a power supply getting ready to go out.  I ordered one from Amtronix,  It was totally dead.  A call to them and another was on the way in no time.   It has been working for about 2 years now with no problems.

+1 on amtronix.
I hear nothing but good things about them.

Consider the hp 8924c when they have them in stock.  Granted it was a
cellular test set, it has all the analog stuff built in.
Spectrum analyzer, tracking generator, sinad meter, etc.  If the unit is a
3 watt unit they can upgrade it to a 60 tor 100 watt input.
