I just got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YPDQHI/ref=oh_o00_s00_i01_details)dial indicator sets and a laser tach in the mail.

The tach seems to work OK. Although it shows that the lathe does not change speed much at the beginning and end of the the dial travel. Also, while I can slow the lathe down below about 70rpm it pretty much stalls at those speeds. So much for the specs. At first I thought I was going to have to put some black tape around the chuck, but the reflective tape seems to work OK without doing that. Not a bad deal for $17. Of course, I will soon have an idea of how fast the lathe is turning at what dial settings without the tach, and it will become another piece of junk in the drawer; which is why I did not want to spend much on it.

The DI/DTI set came with the parts all bouncing around loose in the case, and no instructions. While I have has DI's before this is the first time I have had a DTI. The smaller mount for the DTI took a bit of figuring, until I realized I needed to use a piece from the the bigger mount with it.

My next decision will have to be whether I want a digital protractor or a 4 piece combination square. I have about 4 squares laying about, but do not have a decent protractor. &, nope, I can not afford a Starrett.
