[7x10minilathe] Re: Dial Indicater/Dial Test Indicator set & Laser tachometer

The easiest way to do that is to replace the motor pulley with a smaller one. IIRC, there was some recent discussion, complete with SDP part numbers on the 7x12 group.

I have an old Stewart Warner analog tach ,and the needle is off one way now over 200 rpm ,and was thinking about replacing it.
Ya think something ought to last longer ,I bought it in 67

You may be able to adjust the pots on the speed control board to improve low end torque. There's a generic procedure here:

http://www.mini-lathe.com/Mini_lathe/Modifications/modifications.htm#slow_speed

You should be able to find a data sheet for the board that's in your machine once you open it up & can see the manufacturer's name & model number on the board.

Still, for really controllable high torque low speed work, a hand crank can't be beat!

At first I thought I was going to have to put some black tape around the chuck, but the reflective tape seems to work OK without doing that. Not a bad deal for $17. Of course, I will soon have an idea of how fast the lathe is turning at what dial settings without the tach, and it will become another piece of junk in the drawer; which is why I did not want to spend much on it.

I just got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YPDQHI/ref=oh_o00_s00_i01_details)dial indicator sets and a laser tach in the mail.

The tach seems to work OK. Although it shows that the lathe does not change speed much at the beginning and end of the the dial travel. The DI/DTI set came with the parts all bouncing around loose in the case, and no instructions. While I have has DI's before this is the first time I have had a DTI. The smaller mount for the DTI took a bit of figuring, until I realized I needed to use a piece from the the bigger mount with it.

My next decision will have to be whether I want a digital protractor or a 4 piece combination square. I have about 4 squares laying about, but do not have a decent protractor. &, nope, I can not afford a Starrett.

RE: [Electronics_101] How do I test a stepper motor

Hey Terramir,

Chances are that you will find the driver right on the printer board. IC
L293D is an H Bridge that you could by:

Good luck

well on a first note I watch the video and it helped I could verify that
there were to continuous coils 6 to 9 ohms depending on the stepper motor.
As for the H bridges I didn't quite know what to make of that but all three
stepper motors had a coil between 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 and if I applied power
between 1 and 3 it snapped to the next step also the same with two and four
it then locks in that position.so would you guys say they all work?terramir

Hi Terramir,

Normally, 4 wires stepper are bipolar motors. If so, you will need H Bridge

Stepper Driver. Just Google it. He is a good page on the difference.

Well I am collecting stepper motors from printers and such and I know to

make real use of them I need a stepper controller IC and some kind of

processor program etc. That's ok got the scematic parts are coming and well

gonna slap that together etc to finish 14th of febuary if everything goes

right. but what I need to know if how I can check out stepper motors very

simply to verify functionality . there are 4 wire hybrid stepper motors 17pm

type with 4 contacts. just want to run checks on them before I get going too

far to see if I'll have to buy other ones.

Let me know
