Is it a serial cable or USB cable? If it is a serial cable, an 
 ohm meter should tell you. It needs a 9 pin female  to female 
 wired straight through not not a null modem cable. I believe the 
 RTS and CTS lines are required and hardware flow control should 
 be enabled in the program to use them.
