I agree with Ian, I have never encountered a precision rod from a shock absorber or printer that is any better than common drill rod - whether in concentricity, straightness, or consistency over a certain length.
The best thing to do for a test rod, is to make one. Just chuck up some stock in whatever method you have, center drill each end. Then set it up between centers and take light cuts, making adjustments to the tailstock until you get a nice round diameter over its length.
