The easiest way to do that is to replace the motor pulley with a smaller one. IIRC, there was some recent discussion, complete with SDP part numbers on the 7x12 group.

Which Tach did you buy ,and do you like it ?
I have an old Stewart Warner analog tach ,and the needle is off one way now over 200 rpm ,and was thinking about replacing it.
Ya think something ought to last longer ,I bought it in 67

Thanks, that is an idea I will look into. I am also thinking about adding reduction to the drive.

You may be able to adjust the pots on the speed control board to improve low end torque. There's a generic procedure here:

You should be able to find a data sheet for the board that's in your machine once you open it up & can see the manufacturer's name & model number on the board.

Still, for really controllable high torque low speed work, a hand crank can't be beat!

I just got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YPDQHI/ref=oh_o00_s00_i01_details)dial indicator sets and a laser tach in the mail.

The tach seems to work OK. Although it shows that the lathe does not change speed much at the beginning and end of the the dial travel. Also, while I can slow the lathe down below about 70rpm it pretty much stalls at those speeds. So much for the specs.
