[Electronics_101] Outdoor Motion Sensor Activated Light - how to test?

 

A friend of mine has a few outdoor motion sensor activated lights (for example, at her front door), and seems to be having trouble with them.

1) Is there an easy way to test the sensor/light? I have tried turning it on at the light switch (inside the house) and going out the door. When I do this, it seems to work properly, but we are unsure that it is working correctly all night. Does it come on for no reason? Some times it doesn't seem to activate until you're really close to the door.

Is there some way to test the light functionality?

2) Also, in the light fixture at her front door, she put in a CFL bulb at one time and the light was having trouble functioning. Is it recommended that a CFL not be using in a motion sensor activated light fixture?

I have read online that it may or may not be alright. Don't know?

I would like to make sure the front door, motion sensor light is working correctly without camping out in front of front door. ;-)

Any input or feedback would be appreciated.

I am just now working on my TS-440S.
Call up HyperTerminal. Set it to your COM port. Set it to 4800Baud,
NO handshake.
Type "FA;"
It should reply with the frequency of vfo A.

In HRD, I tell it my COM port, CTS and RTS, 4800baud.

Hopefully the TS-480 is same...

Is it a serial cable or USB cable? If it is a serial cable, an
ohm meter should tell you. It needs a 9 pin female to female
wired straight through not not a null modem cable. I believe the
RTS and CTS lines are required and hardware flow control should
be enabled in the program to use them.

Check the radio specs, MOST older kenwood only used 4800, 8, n,2 so 38k WILL
not work, check the manual and set hrd or kenwood software to that.

If you have to use HRD, it does have a find a baud test routine if you set
the port and baud to AUTO... if it finds it, set that as the default, don't
leave it on auto....

The only other way to test the interface, is get another, or have another
ham try it out. What are you using

If232c, or aftermarket one, which one, and ask them for help, they may just
replace it for you

You can do anything you want , however make sure the computer port you are using is at 34k or even faster , hrd is quite particular about that
