I would think that a single or dual tone would be OK as you can look at the wave form for distortion. Also I might think that the demodulator might be in question, but it has been a long time since I have looked at the circuits for the Collins.
You might look at the output of the mechanical filter and sweep the audio through the bandpass and see what happens to the amplitude there and at the output of the audio stages. 
A sideband signal is just a group if frequencies in the sideband with no carrier. 
Since you are troubleshooting audio you might just tune in an AM broadcast station on 40 meters in AM and the switch to SSB and look at the signals in the circuits you are interested in. Since you are working on an 52S1 you could choose any SW broadcast station to provide the signal.
