Re: [Amateur-repairs] Opinions and thoughts on some old Heathkit test gear

#3.  Flyback and yoke ringer still has value as a switching power supply transformer tester.  You can to this day buy new ring testers:. http://www.electronicrepairguide.com/blue-ring-tester.html

Completely handy when you need one but how many times unless you're in the business are you going to check a switch mode power supply transformer for shorted winding?

I have one of these transistor checkers. I assembled it in 1977 and have been using it ever since. It has the ability to change the current through the transistor to measure changes in gain or in some cases total failure. I really like this feature and am still using it while working on classic stereo equipment. I would like to get rid of the batteries but there is no room inside to construct two 1.5 volt power supplies. For that matter 2 volt supplies would work fine. This tester has one small problem that you must deal with. When testing transistors with high current, the battery connection must be perfect or the reading will waver. You need to know if this waver is a transistor fault or just the battery. I solder my batteries into this tester to stop this problem. I keep considering the possibility of making a power supply that has two 2 volt supplies. It would have to be external and I hate to have this tester in two pieces.

Most testers just use tiny amounts of current to test the transistor. In my view, this is not satisfactory. Of course this tester also measures all the possible points of leakage with great sensitivity. I would never part with this tester.

Hi Tim,

I have #1 that was given to me and I can't return the favor.
#2, I'll leave that to the more learned members
#3    Now this might be useful for those working on vintage televisions, crt's, etc...  There are groups in Ohio and in NJ.  For the group in NJ, look up https://infoage.org/  I'd post a question to the New Jersey Antique Radio Club.  They have members interested in Television.  For the Early Television Foundation in Ohio, go to: https://www.earlytelevision.org/

My hope is they will give you some advise.

Subject: [Amateur-repairs] Opinions and thoughts on some old Heathkit test gear

Hi all- ---

1.
I was recently given a Heathkit IG-28 color bar and dot generator, used for aligning now-largely-nonexistent TVs and monitors.

I'm wondering what, if any, other purposes people can think of for this piece of equipment?
Looking around on eBay, this doesn't seem to be particularly valuable  -- many auctions complete with no sale, and the few that do, are below $15.00
So I'm not particularly inclined to try to sell it --
It would seem to be potentially more useful

2. Heathkit IG-3120  FET/Transistor tester
I have two of these
This seems like it'd have potentially some greater value.
But how much more accurate/better of a piece of test gear might this be
than a more modern DMM or even one of those parts ID LCD boards on Ebay (which I have one of)

If it's a decent tester that does better/more than a modern DMM or other gear, I may keep one and sell the other.
Seems like they can go for enough to bother with...

3. Eico Flyback XFMR and Yoke Tester Model 944

This also is another piece of gear that tests things which no longer exist.

Might it be re-usable as a power supply for HV purposes or something?
As in, rebuild it to be a power supply for a one-tube transmitter or something?

Again, not worth much on Ebay, and the potential parts inside may be worth more
than the actual meter is ---
Possibly useful for rebuilding into something more useful?
