This might be easier to answer if you had a specific make and model in mind.  some are easier to do, because they may already have an add on

like the ts520 , they had the dg5.

also it might give the smarter than me  techs a better idea of I.F. and whatever else is needed

On transmit frequency counter is easier, but does not help on receive
