[sherline] Re: What Range and Resolution for Dial Test Indicator Set

I've been using the Starrett "Last word" for years and would be lost without it.  This one on eBay is almost identical to the one I bought. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Starrett-711FSZ-Last-Word-Dial-Test-Indicator-With-Case-No-711/302768611968?epid=1401562683&hash=item467e6a6280:g:LFAAAOSw4Q5bHwxn   At $99 it looks to be an excellent deal and looks to have all the parts but I can't guarantee it.  If you get it and it doen't work, I believe that Starrett will charge about $100 to repair it.  Still well below the $300+ a new one would cost.

By the way, I dumped the magnetic base.  Too much of a pain to use on such small machines.  I got and extra
riser block for my mill and bored a hole and taped a set screw to hold the Starrett arm. I then mounted it on the mill permanently.    Much more convenient than trying to find a place to mount a magnetic base.  Yes, it probably weakens the block and thus reduces the stiffness, but a small hole like that isn't going to do much.

I also milled a simple mount for the cross slide on my lathe.  Just an aluminum block with two holes for T nuts and a hole and set screw for the indicator.  Again, much less bulky than a magnetic base.  Those are really designed for full sized machines where you have a lot of space on the ways.

[sherline] What Range and Resolution for Dial Test Indicator Set

I wish for someone to direct me to what Range and Resolution is suitable for lathe / Mill set up and testing roundness of stock etc.  Especially when using my Independent 4 Jaw.

Thanks
of course Make and Model # would be great if you do not mind supplying that info. Also mounting hardware and all the parts pieces to make the measurements. (magnetic holders, etc)

Well I just received 5 messages in the last hour (yours and 4 replies).

It is not unusual for Yahoo to mess up on the delivery of messages. I get a kick out of it when I receive an answer to a question, and then receive the original post a few days later!

That's why I started time&date stamping my posts.
