Re: [Amateur-repairs] substitute test equipment

Oh yes you can substitute a computer generated, sound card, signal for the audio generator.

For the frequency counter & RF voltmeter, couldn't I just use my oscilloscope? I have access to a scope that can internally measure all kinds of parameters including frequency, Vp, Vrms, etc. Any problem with doing that?

Audio signal generator: I have both a program on my computer and an app on my phone that will generate audio tones at adjustable levels. Any problem with that instead of using a dedicated audio generator?

I still need to get my RF signal generator up and running. I have an old wavetek that is a little persnickety...

[multimachine] Re: Alignment of spindle with ways

Angled washers.  You ask, you get.  I have had the privilege to work on many different things over the years.  And a kean eye for strange and new things to me.  Can't remember people's names if you put a gun to my head.  But all things weird and sundry are not a problem.

Or you could simply take a piece of available rod or square stock and cut the appropriate angle after you have drilled a hole.

Concrete bending.  I posted this quite a few times:

GFRC - Post Tension Cantilever Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Pay attention to the dimensions of the concrete.  A bit cheezy, but still kind of interesting.

External post tensioned GFRC test - Glass Fiber Reinforeced Concrete

 Post Tensioned GFRC

You sure can bend concrete.  And you don't have to believe me, it's plain for you to watch with your own eyes.

Your channel iron is 1 1/2"?

That would be large enough to pass a 5/8" all thread and have a nut firmly sitting on the flat.

A few notes on the concrete videos.  The mix used is measured by weight.  But is a rough 50/50 sand portland cement mix.  No aggregate.

What strikes me as the most interesting part is the actual cross sections that are doing the support.  Not very thick at all.  The bent coffee table that gets a tension rod is only 3/4" (18mm) thick.  He uses Glass fiber reinforcement.

I did a bunch of digging on the internet about chopped up soft drink bottles having a useful effect on concrete.

Here are a few links:

Re: [Amateur-repairs] Re: "sick" Bird 43

I watched the short movie. I can see the procedure you are using.
Are you connected directly to the terminals on the meter with the meter
disconnected from the rest of the instrument? I am sorry if this seems
obvious but with something this puzzling you must check everything. I
can't help but think the problem is not the meter movement. If you are
sure of the full scale current then it could be the meter but I strongly
suggest taking the meter out of the case and looking to see if there is
a shunt inside. If there is it may be bad although I would expect the
value to go up rather than down. If you intend to replace the meter
anyway you can do no harm this way. Now, another thing to look at. I
assume you have looked at the zero reading. If not make sure the pointer
is zeroed. Adjust the zero screw to make sure. Sometimes the stop at
the zero end is right at zero so if the zero adjustment can't bring the
pointer below zero and it looks correct. Bring it above zero a little
and then back. Somehow I really do not want you to give up on this thing.

[Amateur-repairs] Re: "sick" Bird 43

I did some power tests using the Dielectric 25 w VHF element - here is the clip

Dielectric RF wattmeter power reading test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WMNAD6c2NA

I Wouldn't think the lower power results to be considered within spec/tolerance?
But the closer to full scale , it was very accurate to the TX power - and that's where +/- 5% is the given tolerance?
