RE: [7x12minilathe] End of my "test" of digital calipers

Hi Stuart

as you correctly point out resolution and accuracy are not the same thing. Digital devices in particular even if they were 100% accurate can only resolve to the smallest digit they can display and you have no way of knowing if the displayed 0.0005 is 0.0005,6,7,8 or 9 before it gets to the next 0.001

In a well made and marked mechanical gauge you can interpolate the position of the pointer between markings

Don't be fooled by the apparant resolution though, it doesn't mean they
are any more accurate.

Even Mitutoyo, who's digimatic calipers read to 0.01mm, only claim an
accuracy of +/-0.02mm

My experience is similar to Chris'.  I have had my Harbor Freight $9.99 calipers for over two years, and they are still on the original battery.  I use them at least weekly, and am always careful to make sure they are turned off before putting them back in their box, though they shut off automatically if don't use them for X minutes.

Re: [7x12minilathe] End of my "test" of digital calipers

I've had a $10 harbor Freight digital caliper for maybe 4 months now and still on the same battery.  It could just be luck.   I think our sample sets are to small to be statistically relevant.

My _guess_ is that the electronics inside is some small chip that is made in only one place and the expensive and cheap calipers use the same part inside.

As I mentioned in March, I bought a pair of Z-Limit digital calipers from LMS (#4251) and I was going to test them to see if they ate batteries like my inexpensive digital calipers.  The "test" was just letting them sit around (with occasional use) to see if the batteries went dead.  It's been two months and the batteries are fine, so the calipers officially pass. These calipers are also usefully more precise, reading to .0005" instead of .001"

I realize the difference in price between these and my inexpensive digital calipers (#1758, also from LMS) would buy a hell of a lot of batteries, but the inconvenience of picking up a measuring tool and having to stop the work you were doing in order to fool around with it and get it working right is worth it to me, even if I had a shoe box full of batteries under my workbench.

[SOUTHBENDLATHE] Test Mandreal

I have a MT 4 test mandreal that I purchased from Chronos,  England. This test bar is brand new. Never opened. Still in the factory sealed plastic wrap. This is a precision ground bar.

If interested the price is; $125.00 plush shipping. For the lower 48 I think $12.00 should cover it.

Thank you, Jay
